When I decided that I liked triathlons, I got a bike and helmet.
And wanted to keep the skin on my hands so I bought some gloves, god damn it..

I wanted to keep tires in my shirt so I got a jersey with pockets
And the sun was beating in my eyes so I got sunglasses for my sockets.

I didn’t want my butt to hurt so I got cycling shorts.
I didn’t want to ask for his pump so I bought one of course,

I wanted to be part of a team so I went and got their outfit,
And now its cold and I need more stuff, I just can’t live without it!

Here is a list of what I got:

Gloves – Full finger gloves with a secret pocket that has a cover for my fingers

Socks – They look like gloves for you feet and they go under your cycling shoes

Pants – Thick thick pants so that my legs don’t get red again.

Hat – A scull cap to put underneath my helmet. It also covers ears.

Undershirt – A tight shirt that is breathable to wear under everything.

Here is a list of what I need:
A jacket – The one at the store was too small.  I need a serious one.
Booties – These go over your cycling shoes to keep even warmer

Chicago Marathon

I woke up on the day of the Chicago Marathon and walked one block south of my house to the 21km mark of the marathon.  It was at that moment that I realized how much I miss the competitions.  I miss the training and the nervousness, the freezing mornings, the line to the bathrooms, the heaps of people… Soon after this realization, I met my friend Gil and we walked over to the finish line and then to a friends house that overlooked the stream of runners.  It was an amazing events and I got great photos from the balcony.

My New York City Marathon is officially postponed to next year but my spot is saved.   Meanwhile I’m back to very light running and eventually I will increase the distance and time.

Another Opera – Lulu

Now for my famous synopsis –
Lulu was adopted by an old guy when she was twelve and he turned her into a dancer so she could get guys.  She married a guy and got caught cheating and the husband died.  She married the guy she was cheating on him with and got caught cheating again and the next husband killed himself.  Then, she married the guy who adopted her and ended up shooting him after he caught her cheating with a bunch of guys.  She got sent to prison and a girl helped her escape.  Then she had shares that turned out to be worth nothing and she became a prostitute and got murdered.

Southbeach Diet
I’m finally on a diet (yay).  South beach diet is really easy to follow and there is a lot to eat.  The concept is not to eat any sugar.  No sugar from breads or fruit either.  I’ve been on it for five days and I have a week and two days until the end of phase one.  After phase one, other foods are introduced and when I get to my desired weight, I go to phase three.  The problem is that I don’t have a scale but I ordered one online and hopefully the results will be in. My goal for now is to get back to 123 lbs or around 55 kilo.

Half Ironman
The training has begun for the half ironman. I’m aiming for the Ford half ironman in Florida (May).  You can check out my workout routine whenever you want by going here:

I write comments on each workout so you can glance at that too.  The one great thing about it, is the swimming.  I’ve always just swam 30 minutes of freestyle and now I have kicks and drills and different strokes (for different folks) which makes the workout more interesting.  Also, my stroke is improving so feel free to try any workout or ask me about it.  Sharone Aharon and wellfit (his company) get full credit for everything! In Chicago, the city doesn’t stop but there’s no reason to do anything differently.  I grabbed my bike and I set off on the path by the lake.  I rode all the way up north as much as I could.  Then, I turned around and rode back.  On the way back someone asked me about my water bottle and it turned out to be Sharone, the Israeli triathlon instructor who lives in Chicago.  The two hours which I had planned, quickly turned into three and I learned about the secret bike paths in Chicago.

So how do you ‘gear up for Yom Kippur’? This was Sharone’s status on facebook so I’m guessing it means to add up to 120psi, fill your bottle with Gatorade and have a pasta dinner.  For everyone else it just means to have a pasta dinner, sleep, sleep and sleep.

Culture:
I went to another opera called ‘The Pearl Fisherman’.  Your waiting for the cliff notes I bet: Two friends promise not to let a girl get between them, after years they reunite, woman comes to village to pray for fisherman, if she falls in love she will be killed, she falls in love, they get caught, village wants to kill them, other guy lights village on fire, the couple escapes, other guy is killed by villagers.  The end.

Food:

I found a great recipe.  Most recipes on the back of food products are underestimated so I thought I’d take a chance (take a chance take a chance…).  Last time I made chicken, it didn’t come out as chewable as I had hoped but this recipe made the chicken good and juicy.  It was on the back of an Athenos package of feta cheese.(See : Easy Feta Chicken Bake)

On a hard assets note, I went all the way to Kellogg for a lecture about managing risk by Sam Zell.  No matter how far away I get, University is always important to me and any chance to sit in on something interesting is an opportunity I’ll take.  Sam can’t deliver a lecture without saying the word f**k which makes it a treat to hear him speak.  Only a man in his position can afford to blurt that kind of language whenever he chooses.

Now a story for children –

Bottom line – I’m a spinning instructor! Hopefully, they will let me work at the gym in my apartment building.  That would be mighty convenient.

Chicago Marathon

“If you don’t know how to swim or tread water then just let me know and we can have you do just a bike run”.  I kid you not.

This is what the coordinator of the North East Triathlon said in the orientation speech.  He also said “When your swimming, take a right , a right and a left. If you have done that, look between your legs.  If there isn’t a bike there, something is wrong.”  Orientation aside, I have officially participated in my first US triathlon and even (somehow) placed second in my age group.

Bright and not early on Saturday afternoon, I headed to ‘North East’ Maryland.  Clearly, the founder of ‘North East’ didn’t have much of an imagination to say the least.  He was probably friends with the discoverer of the town ‘1770′ in Australia.  My sisters name should have been ‘Second’.

Anyway, we attended orientation and I got my participant pack.  Unfortunately, I had to transfer from the Olympic to the Sprint race because my leg can’t take me 10km anymore… sorry 6.2 miles (It’s hard to get used to).  This is still better than not attending which is a thought that may have crossed my mind when my physical therapist told me “don’t participate” but quickly vanished when a homeless stranger told me “you should do it”.  So what if he was drooling? and was referring to something else… and smelled like…. (you get the point)

In the evening, my grandparents and I went to have pasta.  Here is a photo of my pasta… after I had finished eating.  I was full when this photo was taken and so was my grandmother.

After loading up on carbs, it was time to visit the (all mighty) Wallmart.  My grandparents were quite excited when they saw that we were close to one and assumed this meant civilization exists in North East Maryland.  It’s kind of sad that Wallmart = civilization.  I’m sure columbus didn’t see and Indian Wallmart when he came.  Ignoring my constant pondering I purchased some water, a 100 calorie pack of Oreos, some cinnamon gum and I was ready for bed.

Bright and early, I ate my breakfast of champions which consisted of a bagel and honey.  I actually only ate half because I’m doing half the distance that I had planned and needed half the energy.  If you had half a brain, you would have realized that.  The race started at seven and a half… hmm… that didn’t work… The race started at seven thirty so I had plenty of time to get ready and head for the toilets.  Not many people take photos inside porta-poties but when I saw the purel in my gourmet ‘hole in the ground’, I had to take a shot.  This is one place where Israel could learn a thing or two.

Off to the dock for the start of the race.  There is nothing like jumping into muddy water after singing the star spangle banner.  Luckily, the ducks realized that it was dangerous to stick around and retreated to other areas of the river.  I was glad because if anyone was to kill a duck with their swim stroke and get chased down the river by an angry pack, it probably would have been me.

Swim went by easily but slowly and I quickly ended up in the amazing bike course.  The course was about 15 miles of rolling hills.  During the cycle part, I began passing participants because of my advantage in cycling, it is my strongest part right now.  The course was beautiful and was on country roads with forrest on both sides.  There were some sharp turns but plenty of volunteers and police were happy to warn us.  The transition was okay and I began running.  On the run course I noticed that there weren’t many people running with me and after the turn around, that there were a lot of people running behind me.  Soon, the finish line was in the distance and I had completed my first triathlon in the US.

Somehow I got second place in my category with a time of 1:41.46.

The key points of differentiation between US and Israeli triathlons are

• Volunteers actually mark you before entering the transition area
• Bathrooms are great
• They sing the anthem before the race
  
• There is a category called “First time” where first time participants can receive a medal

רכיבה אחרונה.  האמת שעד היום לא הרגשתי ממש עצב בקשר לנסיעה שלי לשיקגו. אני מתחילה לחשוב שאולי השפיעו עלי אלמנטים חיצוניים כמו האנטי-אוקסידנטים* שקובי הזריק לוורידים ואולי החומוס** שאסנת הביאה (מ’מגה’) עשה לי משהו בגרון.  לא חשבתי על התחממות כדור הארץ כל היום לשם שינוי אז העצב לא בא משם.  יש סבירות גבוהה שאולי אני מתחילה לקלוט שאני עוזבת את כל האנשים, המציאות והעולם שאני מכירה. (מספיק דרמטי?)

אין דרך טובה יותר להגיד ‘ביי’ מאשר 111 קילומטר של רכיבה במסלול ג’ירו השרון^.  יכולתי להתחיל מצומת רעננה אבל זאת הרכיבה האחרונה וצריך להפציץ בנפח.  ארבע שעות רכיבה עברו כמו טיל יפני על סטרואידים וכבר איכשהו הגענו לכפר הירוק.  We didn’t pass go and didn’t collect 100 dollars.

באמצע הרכיבה החלטתי שאני חייבת איזה פאנצ’ר אחרון^ לדרך כדי לנוח טיפה ולתת משמעות לרכב ליווי הצמוד.  מהר מאד החלפתי גלגל והמשכנו הלאה.  רק עצרנו למים ופיפי***.

אחרי הרכיבה הזריזה, התכנסנו שוב כולנו כדי לחגוג לי ‘ביי’.  היה המון המון אוכל וכולם תרמו עם המאכלים הביתיים שלהם.  נינה הכינה סלט נינה, פבל הכין סלט פבל, ירון הכין סלט פירות, דני הביא פשטידה ואני את הבעלי מתים.  אכלנו עד כדי החזרת הקלוריות העבודות ואז, אחרי הקינוחים, התחיל הגודביי האמתי.  קובי ונינה**** אמרו לי כמה דברים בקשר לרכיבה ולזמן הרב שבילינו ביחד.

כשהצטרפתי לקבוצה ורכבתי בקלילות מערד לים המלח וחזרה^, לא ידעתי אם אני מסוגלת להתמיד בקצב של אלופת הארץ ועוד תותחים כמו קובי ודני שלגמו קילומטרים כבר שנים על גבי שנים.  מרכיבה לרכיבה לא ידעתי אם אני אצליח לקום בבוקר ולא הרגשתי שכל העסק הזה בא לי בצורה טבעית בכלל.  לאחרונה אני ניסיתי הרבה מאד ‘תחביבים’ שונים ומשום מה דווקא הרכיבה ודווקא הקבוצה הזאת, Stuck.  לאחר תקופה, היה רגע בשלב כלשהו שבו פתאום ידעתי שאני קמה ביום שבת לרכב אפילו בגשם.  אפילו כשלא יורד גשם ומתחיל גשם תוך כדי רכיבה וממשיכים לרכב.  אפילו כשאין גשם אבל ירד אתמול ויש פאנצ’ר כל 2 דקות.  אפילו כשהזיעה של כל הקבוצה מריחה כמו אנטי-אוקסידנטים* מהלילה לפני ואפילו כשקובי שוכח לקום בבוקר. (זה לא ישכח *****

אחרי השלב הזה, הרכיבות פשוט הרגישו כמו המשך טבעי של השבוע ופספוס של רכיבה הרגישה כמו החמצה קשה.  מרכיבה לרכיבה למדתי המון על טכניקה, על רכיבה בכביש, על תזונה ובעיקר על כל האנשים.  עכשיו אני צריכה לקחת את הסטנדרטים שלי לקבוצת רכיבה ולהוריד אותם בצורה משמעותית לקראת שיקגו. אין ספק שקבוצה כזאת לא קיימת בשום מקום אחר.  נדירים הם הרוכבים שייקחו רוכבת מתחילה תחת חסותם בכזו צורה.

אני לא ארבה במילים, התמונות מספקות

נתחיל בשאלה המתבקשרת. מי צריך כזה דבר? היופי הוא שברגע שרואים את האופניים המתקפלות האלה, אפשר לחשוב על לפחות עשרה מקמות בהם היה מאד נח להסתובב עם כזה דבר – בקמפוס , בעבודה, למכולת, בטיולים בחו”ל , וכמובן, מהחניה הרחוקה אל תוך תל-אביב.

הנה תמונה מאליפות העולם של אופניים מתקפלות:

אבל המהפכה לא נגמרת כאן. יש מספר לא קטן של אופציות לגבי הקניה. יש את החברה הבריטית Brompton. החברה הזאת אפילו מארגנת תחרות של אופניים כאלה -

אבל זה לא הכל, יש עוד המון פטנטים חדשים בתחום. למשל יש מישהו שהחליט שבמקום לקפל, אפשר גם למחוץ! זה פשוט גאוני ובטח יש עוד מלא דברים שאפילו לא הצלחתי למצוא. אם אתם מכירים עוד אז תשאירו תגובות. דמיינו איזה טריאתלון מגניב היה יכול להיות אם היה צריך לרוץ עם האופניים על הגב ולהחליף מריצה לאופניים בכמה מקומות במהלך התחרות!

היום היתה רכיבה מעולה אבל היה Ra. מזל שיצאנו בשש וחצי במקום שבע אחרת היינו נצלים לגמרי בשמש היום. מה זה Ra? חשבתי שזה ברור… Ra זה אל השמש המצרי כמובן. הוא עוקב אחרי השמש העולה, ממשיך איתה במהלך היום עד סיום השקיעה. קל לזהות אותו מכיוון שיש לו ראש של נץ ושמש על הראש. ברגע מונומנטלי זה, אני רוצה להציג לכם אל חדש. לאל קוראים ‘אל העליות’, ראו תמונה.

אם נסכם במשפט לא תקין את הרכיבה של היום, נקבל משהו בסגנון הזה:
מוקדם, עליות, קשה, נס הרים , בר בהר, פיצול, ירידה, נוווווווף, נחשון, אוכל, מקלחת , שנ”צ , Milan-San Remo , פיקנים סינים, יין , יין , יין.

בפוסטים אחרים דיברתי מספיק על עליות לכן היום החלטתי להתרכז דווקא בירידות.
כשאמרו לי 90 מעלות בעבר, חשבתי על מזג האויר, ועל גיאומטריה ( pi חלקי 2). היום כשאומרים לי 90 מעלות אני מדמיינת גוש אספלט שבמבט ראשון נראה שהוא מסתיים ובמבט שני רואים שבעצם יש פיטול בכביש… פיטול של 90 מעלות כמובן… ובשיפוע שלילי. (מסר לאמא ולאבא – נא לא לקרוא את המשפט הבא) לפעמים, היו רכבים בכוון הנגדי שעלו ב 90 מעלות לכוון שלי. מיותר לאמר שצריך מאד מאד להיזהר בירידה הזאת ולהאט אחו$%₪#@ …. וכך עשיתי.
לא מיותר לאמר שהנוף היה עוצר נשימה ולא רק בגלל הפחד שאני אכנס ברכב חזיתית אלא באמת היה יפה. אפילו היה רגע שבו העצים הגנו עלינו מפני השמש משני הכוונים בכביש יחסית צר וקריר… Ra קיבל הפסקה כדי לשמור על כמה רוכבים אחרים

אחרי הרכיבה, כלומר בערב, נפגשנו כולנו (הגברים ואני) כדי לראות את התחרות של Milan-San Remo. אני בדרך כלל לא רואה ספורט בטלויזיה אבל דווקא מזה אני נהנית. אם נעזוב לרגע את העובדה שהשוואנו שרירים, יש משהו בצפיה בתחרות אופניים שהיא יותר מתאימה לסטייל שלי. אם במשחק כדורגל או כדורסל שותים בירה ואוכלים בוטנים, אצל קובי בבית שותים מרלו ואוכלים פיקן סינים – זה כבר שיפור משמעותי.

היום רכבנו לחריש ושם פגשנו את העליונה. לא בדיוק עשו בינונו הכרות והאווירה היית מאד רצינית. עלי אישית זה לא משפיע מכיוון שיש לי מספיק רצינות בחיי ובתחום האופניים אני מעדיפה להנות ולקחת הכל בקלות (לעבוד קשה אבל לא לקחת קשה). שאר אנשי העליונה היו מאד קשובים למלך כשהוא הסביר על מדידת הזמנים לעליה. הזניקו אותנו בשלשות כל פעם וכמו קסם, המלך הופיע בסיום ואמר לנו בכמה זמן סיימנו.

אחר כך רכבנו למקום שבו יכלנו לעשות סיבובים סביב עצמינו. בכל סיבוב, המלך אמר לי משהו אחר: “למה אין לך כפפות?” (שכחתי באוטו) , “תמצאי מישהו ותדבקי אליו” , “שימי ידיים למטה” (הכוונה על הקידון). בתור מי שרגילה לעידוד, היה לי מוזר מאד לשמוע צעקות אבל לקחתי הכל לתשומת ליבי והמשכתי. בסיבובים הראשונים באמת לא שמתי את הידיים בחלק התחתון של הקידון מכיוון שפחדתי מהפניות, אבל בהמשך האומץ שלי עלה ובאמת נשארתי עם הידיים למטה בכל הסיבוב.

התרגיל הבא היה דומה אבל הפעם רק למשך רבע שעה. בפעם הזאת אני מאד השתפרתי ואני חושבת שחלק מהבנות קצת התעייפו ויכלתי לעקוף אותם. היתה אחת שהיית צמודה אלי כל הדרך והיא עודדה אותי – כמה כיף! ברגעים האלה דווקא מאד נהניתי ולא הרגשתי את הסיבובים.

כשנינה איימה שהחטיף אנרגיה הולך לצאת מאותו המקום שממנו הוא נכנס , הבנו שהגיע הזמן להפריד בין IWCC העליונה והתחתונה. הודענו למלך, נתי, וחזרנו ברכיבה לנקודת יציאה. שם כמובן התענגנו על סנוויצ’ים וקובי ופבל פינקו אותנו ביין טעים

אמנם בתמונה אני לא לובשת את החולצה של ה IWCC אבל עכשיו אני proud owner של חולצה בדיוק כזאת. היום כשאנחנו רוכבים אנחנו נראים כמו עדר של כבשים או להקה של ציפורים או שיירה של נמלים או תיירים יפנים .. אנחנו נראים אותו הדבר. האמת שזה נראה מאד יפה ומקצועי, רק חבל שלא תמיד אני עומדת בקצב. כשזה קורה אני נראית כמו הכבשה שחורה , או ציפור שנתקע בחורף או נמלת דם או תייר בצפון קוריאה… לבד…

אף פעם אני לא באמת לבד. במיוחד ביום שבת (למשל) מכוון שסחבתי את המדריך ספינינג שלי לרכיבה שיצאה מצומת נחשון לצומת ראם לזכריה לצומת האלה לצור הדסה לנס הרים לצור הדסה לרמת בית שמש למחסיה לאיזור תעשיה בית שמש לשמשון ליער הנשיא להראל ובחזרה לנחשון. בהתחלה קצת התעכבתי אבל לאט לאט נכנסתי למוזה וגם היית עליה כמו שאני אוהבת, בשיפוע.

בעליות, אני הבן אדם המקשיב הכי טוב שיש. כמו בשיתוק של כל הגוף, אני מביעה את עצמי בעליה בעזרת מצמוצי עיניים ולכן אנשים יכולים לדבר כמה שבא להם. הכי מצחיק אותי כשהם אומרים לי “אל תדברי, אני אדבר” ואני אפילו לא מסכימה וורבלית, אני רק ממצמצת. כל האנרגיות שלי מרוכזות בעליה, בנשימה ובהקשבה כמובן. בזמן העליות קובי הופך להיות מדריך טיולים נלהב וככה אני לומדת איזה פרח ואיזה ציפור אני רואה. האמת שאף פעם לא הבנתי את היתרון שיש בידע על פרחים. איזה תועלת יש בידע כזה? אולי אפשר לשלב את זה עם משהו מעניין יותר כמו למשל : ‘קורס יין ופרחים’ או ‘קורס צילום ופרחים’ (דווקא מתאים…) או ‘קורס סיבוכיות וחישוביות ו… פרחים’ (פחות מתאים). הדבר היחיד שאפשר לעשות באמת, זה לצלם את הפרח ולפרסם ספר של פרחים כדי שאחרים ידעו איך קוראים להם. זה יעיל כמו ללמות תורה.

ואיך אפשר לשכח את היומולדת של ירון 3 (הידוע בציבור כירון היפה יותר). ירון חגג לנו עם בקבוק יין בסוף הרכיבה. אין כמו Isostar ויין מתערבבים בבטן אחרי פעילות גופנית ולפני נסיעה של שעה. ירון 3 בן 30… אולי נקרא לו ירון 30. אני לא חושבת שהוא יאהב את זה כל כך אבל תמיד אפשר לנסות. ירון היפה יותר, מזל טוב!! שירבו הרכיבות שלנו ושתזכה לעוד 90 שנה במקרה בטוב.
